First baseman Nathaniel Lowe signed with the Boston Red Sox, the club announced Monday, after it finalized a deal for a prorated portion of the major league minimum, and the veteran appeared as a pinch hitter during a 6-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

The Boston Red Sox are signing slugging first baseman Nathanial Lowe after he had been designated for assignment by the Nationals last week in favor of younger players, ESPN.com reported. Lowe will join one of the most potent offenses in baseball with Boston in the midst of a tight American League playoff race.

Still, Lowe has hit 17 doubles, 16 homers and driven in 68 runs while walking at a decent rate. He's 30 years old and has previously won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger award. This is a big fella with a sweet left-handed swing who can also field his position.
