Many moved in the right direction on Moving Day at the 2025 Genesis Invitational, but perhaps most surprising was those who did not. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and world No. 3

The lowest scorer among them was journeyman Denny McCarthy, who assumed the first-round lead with an eagle on the 574-yard, par-5 18th hole. McCarthy smashed his drive 308 yards off the tee and put his second shot within 7 1/2 feet of the cup before completing a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke advantage over Seamus Power and Patrick Rodgers.

Despite a bogey on the par-5 18th hole when he put his third shot in the only water hazard on the course, Patrick Rodgers grabbed a one-shot lead over Denny McCarthy with a 4-under 68. Rodgers, who finished three rounds at 8-under 208, and McCarthy have combined for nearly 500 PGA Tour starts without finishing better than second.
