The Denver district attorney has launched an investigation into how a spreadsheet of voting system passwords ended up on the Colorado secretary of state’s website earlier this year.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office has hired a new law firm to investigate how passwords to Colorado’s voting machines ended up online. Attorneys Beth Quinn and J. Mark Baird with the law firm Baird Quinn LLC will look into the security breach.

The Colorado secretary of state issued a statement confirming that the partial passwords to its voting system were live on its website for a time.

Colorado officials said Friday that the state’s elections are secure after a spreadsheet including a list of passwords used to access voting systems was inadvertently posted on the Secretary of State’s website.

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold did not describe the incident as a threat to election integrity and said all passwords have been reset “out of an abundance of caution.”
