For years, Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have railed against the IRS and its cadre of armed agents. Now the administration has big plans for them: It wants the agents to assist with immigration enforcement.

Secretary Kristi Noem directed the IRS to deploy agents to investigate financial transactions associated with human trafficking.

In the memo, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to deputize IRS agents to help with immigration enforcement efforts across the country. That work could include auditing employers believed to have hired migrants living in the U.

The request comes as Trump boasts about curtailing the IRS, whose agents focus on tax violations and other financial crimes.
