Massachusetts was battered by a swath of heavy rainstorms this week, with some areas flooded under several inches of water. “This time of year, we get thunderstorms and rain events that produce very localized pockets of heavy rainfall,” said National Weather Service forecaster Hayden Frank.

A deluge dumped 6 inches of rain — maybe more — in a wet and wild commute. The flash flooding was so perilous the National Weather Service urged drivers to “turn around, don’t drown” as flash flooding fueled by overnight rains crippled the Thursday morning commuter crawl.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service on Friday at 6:39 p.m. in effect until 7:45 p.m. for Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties.

Unsettled weather today could product thunderstorms capable of causing flash floods in parts of Massachusetts.

The extreme heat is returning to Massachusetts and the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory because of how hot it will feel through Monday.

She added, "On Wednesday, it'll be quite hot, but the difference is the heat index won't be as high. In other words, it won't feel like temperatures are in the 100s. It'll feel more like 95-97 degrees, which may not seem like a lot. But when you've had a couple of days of 100-degree heat, it makes a difference."

Extreme heat warning have been issued for much of Massachusetts as temperatures are expected to break records.
