Democrats and Republicans in the Senate are laying the groundwork for a government shutdown standoff as the clock ticks down.

Six Democrats need to vote for the bill, assuming there are no additional Republican defections, in order for it to pass the Senate.

N.Y., said Wednesday that Democrats would reject a government funding bill that Republicans wrote and passed through the House, leaving it uncertain whether Congress can avert a shutdown before Friday night's deadline.
