Several acne products containing benzene have been recalled due to possible benzene contamination, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said this week.

La Roche-Posay and Proactiv are among the brands affected. Popular acne treatments were recalled due to potential contamination with benzene. Research shows that long-term exposure to benzene may increase cancer risk. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration conducted benzene testing on the products after third-party testing raised concerns.

The agency announced that after concerns were raised about levels of benzene in products containing benzoyl peroxide, they tested 95 acne products with the ingredient. While most had “undetectable or extremely low levels of benzene,” six products showed “elevated levels” of benzene.
