The Trump administration halted a program that promised Nevada $38 million to build faster, more efficient electric vehicle chargers along highways.

Pennsylvania and other states are trying to determine what a Trump administration order last week will mean for the buildout of federally-funded electric vehicle charging stations.

A group of nine senators on the Environment and Public Works Committee said on Tuesday the Trump administration is illegally withholding $3 billion in previously awarded funds to states for electric vehicle charging.

“The majority of Americans will read this and pick up that ‘Trump has killed EV charging,’” said Loren McDonald, a principal at the EV-charging data firm Paren. “For people that are on the fence on getting an EV, this means ‘I shouldn’t get one because I won’t be able to take that road trip.’”

It just got rockier. More than $104 million was allocated for new fast EV chargers in New Jersey via the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure, or NEVI, program. To date, the program has resulted in zero chargers for New Jersey.

Chargers funded through the program were due to be just a small share of those opening this year. The longer-term effects aren’t yet clear.
